Understanding NCEA Assessment in PE

Level 1 internals, Level 1 externals, and the Levels 2 and 3 internals. Each pathway shows where every document lives and what order to work through it in. Every step links straight to the source.

92016 · 92017 · 92018 · 92019

Four standards: two you mark and two NZQA marks. Where each thing comes from differs, so those are shown separately. Almost everything you do afterwards is shared, so the checklist is one list with the splits called out.

Internally assessed

92016 and 92017 · internally assessed

You make the grade judgements, so internal moderation is part of the pathway.

Report results and submit your moderation sample

Once verification is done and results are with your ākonga, select the sample and send it for external moderation.

Phase one

Before you plan

Two of the four standards are marked by you and two by NZQA, so the reading list splits. Do the shared reading once.

Every item here is a document someone else wrote. None of it is optional.
Phase two

Plan and teach

Almost entirely shared. One unit of work can carry an internal and an external, provided the curriculum leads.

If the programme is only recognisable as assessment preparation, something has gone the wrong way round.
Phase three

Assess and send

This is where the two split hardest. For the internals you are the marker; for the externals you are the sender.

Keep internal verification records until the end of the following academic year. Leave room before the external upload deadline.

Existing Level 2 and Level 3 standards

The Level 2 and 3 standards have not been through the review yet, so their guidance sits in a different place: conditions of assessment are still on TKI rather than the NCEA site, and two standards have their own assessment guidelines.

Phase one

Before you plan

Same reading, different addresses. Conditions of assessment for these levels are on TKI, not the NCEA site.

If a clarification exists for a standard you offer, read it before you write the task, not after moderation.
Phase two

Plan, critique and teach

The task you used last year is a starting point, not a finished resource.

Re-contextualising matters most for the performance and outdoor standards, where the setting changes every year.
Phase three

Assess, verify and report

Verification must be done by someone with standard-specific knowledge, not just another teacher.

If you are the only PE specialist in the school, arrange verification with another school before you need it.
