Eligibility Criteria:
The award is the most prestigious that PENZ can confer and it is awarded rarely for distinguished and outstanding services of national or international significance to the profession. Sustained, career-long service which adds to the prestige of the award is the expectation.Sir Alexander Gillies was the Patron of the New Zealand Physical Education Society and the New Zealand Association of Health Physical Education and Recreation (the forerunners to PENZ) from 1936 until 1982. He was a noted orthopaedic surgeon in Wellington and gave time and energy to his links with Physical Education.
- Open to any individual.
- Must be nominated by a current member of PENZ and be endorsed by at least three members of PENZ as either individuals or from three different member organisations.
Award Criteria:
The committee charged with making the recommendation for award of the Sir Alexander Gillies medal should take into account the distinguished and outstanding career-long, sustained contribution of the potential recipient and the following criteria should be considered as an aid to their decision making.
- The national prominence of the potential recipient (positions of seniority in the profession: school, tertiary, Ministry of Education, kindred community organisations).
- The leadership provided by the potential recipient (offices held, presidencies, CEO roles, leadership of national and/or international initiatives such as policy development, curriculum development, course development and research projects).
- The scholarly and academic contribution of the potential recipient (contributes to the field of knowledge by being active in publishing and dissemination of research and scholarly documents).
- The international standing of the potential recipient (invitations to present guest lectures, workshops and/or keynotes, invitations to contribute book chapters, editorial roles, invited to review research and other proposals).
- The contribution of the potential recipient to strategic priorities of PENZ or to the leadership of PENZ (contribution to the on-going welfare of PENZ, offices held, influence on knowledge and practice of physical education in the school, tertiary sector and/or the wider community).
- The status and contributions of past recipients (a level of consistency and comparability is essential).
- The national /international mentoring of physical education colleagues (mentoring and supporting colleagues with advanced degrees, research initiatives, publications, professional and teaching competence, and into leadership positions).
Additional Requirements:
- All nominations must be accompanied by supporting evidence for outlined criteria.
- A comprehensive statement of no more than 1500 words that reflects the seven criteria in explaining why the nominee is worthy of receiving the award.
- Two referees are required, one of whom should be of international standing preferably from outside New Zealand.
