It is with much aroha that we acknowledge the passing of Lady Joan Gillies, a remarkable individual whose dedication and commitment to the Physical Education New Zealand (PENZ) community have left an indelible mark. Lady Joan Gillies was a true champion of physical education, and her contributions have significantly shaped the landscape of our profession.
Lady Joan Gillies was known for her unwavering passion and service to the physical education profession. Her efforts have seen PENZ grow over time and maintain its position as a respected national organisation. Her commitment to excellence was evident in her involvement with the Lady Joan Gillies Award, which recognises outstanding critical evaluations on physical education topics. This award has inspired many to think critically and contribute meaningfully to the wider physical education community.
Her presence at PENZ events was always appreciated. She reminded us of the importance of the work of those who have forged a path before us, allowing us to contribute to the development of physical education in New Zealand. Her attendance at these events added significance and enriched the experience for all participants.
Lady Joan Gillies' legacy will continue to inspire future generations of physical education professionals. Her dedication to the field and her ability to challenge and inspire others will be remembered fondly. We extend our deepest condolences to her family and loved ones during this time.
