After attending Palmerston North Teachers College (1973-76) I was a primary school teacher in Northland and Auckland prior to receiving a post-graduate scholarship to complete my Masters in PE at the University of Victoria, BC, Canada. On returning to NZ, I taught in Taranaki and Waiheke Island until I won a position as a lecturer in Health, Outdoor Education and PE at Wellington College of Education in 1984.

It was here I first met Bob Stothart who convinced me I should take over the editorship of the Journal of Health, PE, Recreation and Dance (AHPERD). In that year, I also attended my first AHPERD Conference in Wellington. And so began my involvement with PENZ Te Ao Kori, subsequently being on the board and President in the 1990s.

In 1994, I was appointed as Head of PE at Palmerston North College of Education shortly before the College merged with Massey University. In 1998 I became the Director of Teacher Education at Massey before taking up the role of Director of the NZ Teachers Council from 2005 to 2014.

Besides PE, I was very involved with sport being fitness trainer for a number of Manawatu teams and the Blackferns for the 1998 and 2002 World Cups.
