I have been a member of PENZ since graduating from the School of Physical Education in Otago in 1978, under the inspirational leadership of Philip Smithells. I was passionate about teaching physical education in New Zealand and in the UK for 25 years before returning to New Zealand to lecture in teacher education at the University of Auckland. During my career, I was privileged to work alongside many inspiring educators and grow my love for physical education. I especially valued working in teacher education, seeing impressive young people become confident teachers. I always encouraged them to join PENZ and as many of them became friends and colleagues, to present their teaching at PENZ conferences. My contribution to the development of senior school physical education saw me honoured as a Fellow and following my time as president of PENZ, as a Life Member. I am grateful for this recognition of my teaching and research and for the opportunity to contribute to the professional organisation for physical education.
