After a few years (1969-75) of primary school teaching I decided to specialise in physical education. This meant upgrading my qualifications which I did at the University of Victoria, British Columbia. Returning to NZ in 1980 with a master’s degree I secured a lectureship at the School of Physical Education, University of Otago. I also joined the NZ Association of Health, Physical Education and Recreation (President 1990–94) and seldom missed the annual conference. After 13 good years in Dunedin, I was appointed foundation Director of Sport and Leisure Studies at the University of Waikato. Beyond an on-going research agenda, a few other contributions included helping write the 1987 Phys Ed Syllabus, had a leading role developing Bursary Phys Ed and Chaired the Moderation Committee, introduced the sport education curriculum to secondary schools, and supported daily physical education in primary schools. I just did my job, so it was a surprise and honor when made a Fellow of PENZ (1995), Life Member of PENZ (2008) and the recipient of the Sir Alexander Gillies Medal (2010). 

Currently I’m enjoying life on the Gold Card and still supporting PENZ.
