Backwards mapping and Scaffolding in HPE Programmes

This session explores how intentional planning through backwards mapping and scaffolding enables teachers to design rich, culturally responsive Physical Education programmes that align with the New Zealand Curriculum (NZC) and support holistic student development.
Backwards mapping begins with the end in mind—identifying the key learning outcomes and life skills we want ākonga to leave with—and then building purposeful learning pathways that connect curriculum objectives to real-world relevance. Scaffolding ensures all learners, regardless of ability or background, are supported to succeed through differentiated, inclusive teaching strategies.

He Ara Hou: Finding Our Way in Bicultural PE Learning Design

We set out on an action learning journey to make our tertiary HPE courses more bicultural - embracing both Māori and Western knowledge systems as part of our Waka Hourua metaphor. Along the way, we experimented with haututu (learning through playful exploration), kori kori (embodied movement-based learning), and tuakana/teina (peer mentoring and reciprocal teaching) to reshape how we teach and learn. It wasn’t always smooth sailing as we hit challenges, questioned our own assumptions, and wrestled with how to weave these approaches into our school and institutional frameworks. Discover practical ways to bring bicultural learning design to life in PE.

Exploring ‘Ihi wehi and wana’ in Physical education

In this wānanga (workshop), we will explore together how mātauranga Māori can shape our understanding and practice of physical education. Through a bicultural lens, we will examine Arnold's (1979) ‘in’ movement concept, highlighting how, in Te Ao Māori, movement is a collective experience influenced by ihi, wehi, and wana. Join us for an interactive, ‘mobile’ wānanga (workshop), where we will deepen our understanding of what it means to be ‘in’ movement, Māori concepts, and how this practically looks in PE lessons (eg 1.1 characteristics of movement strategies. It’s all about the climb

What started as maternity leave quickly turned into six months of hockey coaching and an unexpected deep dive into incorporating mātauranga Māori into my approach. From designing drills inspired by Tāwhirimātea’s winds to fostering team resilience through the wisdom of Tāne Mahuta, this journey has been full of learning, trial and error, and the occasional sideline epiphany.
