Supporting Future Teachers of Health and PE at AUT
Date: 1 Sep 2025
Last week, Physical Education New Zealand (PENZ) had the privilege of contributing to teacher education at Auckland University of Technology (AUT). PENZ Primary and Intermediate Subject Adviser, Marisa McKay, delivered a series of guest lectures and workshops designed to support the next generation of Health and Physical Education (HPE) teachers in Aotearoa New Zealand.
The sessions focused on three key areas that are shaping the future of HPE:
- MoveWell: A resource that develops fundamental movement skills in engaging and structured ways.
- Ngā Taonga Tākaro: Traditional Māori games that build connection, inclusion, and cultural understanding.
- Principles of Quality PE: Approaches to ensure tamariki experience movement that is purposeful, meaningful, and connected to lifelong wellbeing.
Through a blend of kōrero and practical workshops, AUT students explored how these resources can bring variety, depth, and cultural responsiveness into their teaching practice.
Building Skills and Passion for Teaching PE
What stood out most was the energy and commitment of the student teachers. Many shared how they want to make physical education more inclusive and transformative for the young people they will teach. Seeing this enthusiasm is a powerful reminder that the future of HPE in New Zealand is in capable and passionate hands.
“Supporting these future educators to weave together knowledge, practice, and passion for movement is vital for the health of our communities,” says McKay.
"It was also humbling to reconnect with former students who are now preparing for careers in teaching, continuing their own journey of learning and leadership".
PENZ acknowledges AUT for the opportunity to contribute to teacher education and for their ongoing commitment to preparing high-quality educators for the health and wellbeing of our communities.
