Rangatahi Rōpū | Formal Feedback to Draft HPE Curriculum

The PENZ Rangatahi Leadership Group – representing emerging professionals across Health and Physical Education (HPE) – has provided formal feedback on the draft HPE curriculum.
Drawing on their experiences as initial teacher education students, early-career teachers, and practitioners, the group shares a collective perspective on the future of HPE in Aotearoa. Their response highlights key concerns around the narrowing of the curriculum, the risk of reinforcing outdated perceptions of the subject, and the importance of maintaining a holistic, culturally grounded approach to learning.

This submission advocates for a curriculum that upholds the full intent of HPE – one that values hauora, supports diverse learners, strengthens the integration of mātauranga Māori, and enables teachers to respond meaningfully to their local contexts.
