Kaihautū Whakahaere Update: March 2026

Date: 2 Apr 2026

Kia ora koutou,

Term 1 has been a reminder that we are working within a system in the middle of significant change. Across the motu, there is a sense of pace, pressure, and at times, uncertainty as schools and kura navigate shifting curriculum expectations, timelines, and messaging. For many, this has required a constant balancing act between what is known, what is proposed, and what is best for our young people.

What has stood out most is the strength of our community.

We continue to see educators leaning in. Asking questions. Challenging thinking. Sharing practice. Backing each other. That matters. It speaks to a profession that cares deeply about its purpose and the role of physical education in the lives of ākonga across Aotearoa.

At PENZ, much of our work this term has been focused on making sense of the current landscape, advocating where it counts, and ensuring that the voice of the sector is both visible and heard. Alongside this, we have continued to invest in the work that we can control. Strengthening our collective understanding of quality physical education. Supporting teachers with practical guidance. Creating spaces for connection and professional growth.

If you haven't had a chance to check out the Alternative to the Draft PE Curriculum, you can check it out here.

Alternative to the Draft Curriculum

We know the current environment is not straightforward. But we also know that this profession has always been at its best when it holds firm to what matters. For us, that is a clear, knowledge-rich, culturally grounded understanding of physical education that serves all young people in Aotearoa.

Thank you for the way you continue to show up. For your whakaaro, your challenge, and your commitment to getting this right.

Ngā mihi,
Heemi
