Our Newsletter - Takarangi
Date: 9 May 2025
Our refreshed PENZ newsletter, Takarangi, symbolises the interconnected flow of ideas, movement, and knowledge within the Physical Education community. Inspired by our tohu—a triple takarangi spiral—this new name reflects our commitment to growth, connection, and the dynamic nature of PE in Aotearoa.

Why We Chose “Takarangi”
The name Takarangi carries cultural and symbolic meaning within the context of PENZ. Derived from our brand’s visual identity, and gifted to PENZ as a part of the design process, our takarangi represents a spiral form, signifying interconnectedness, continuous growth, and the flow of knowledge—concepts central to our work at PENZ.
Our tohu, a triple takarangi spiral created from manaia forms, visually encapsulates the three primal components identified in our whakataukī: te hā, te hou, te koiri (the source, the sound, the movement). These elements capture the essence of movement and the dynamic nature of physical education. The spiral, or takarangi, visually expresses movement in and out, symbolising the perpetual flow of ideas and energy that defines our work.

A Symbol of Connection & Growth
In some pūrakau, the takarangi reflects the path that Tāne took to the heavens to retrieve the three baskets of knowledge. This metaphor resonates with our mission to continually grow, evolve, and expand our understanding of physical education and to transform communities through quality physical education. Just as the spiral brings together different elements in a fluid, ever-expanding way, Takarangi reflects how our community connects, learns, and progresses together.
A Reflection of Our Identity
Interestingly, the name Takarangi also carries a dual significance for PENZ. The word “taka” is often used in reference to an acronym for “Te Ao Kori Aotearoa”, the Māori name for PENZ. This connection underlines our commitment to upholding our bicultural values and acknowledges the essence of movement and physical education within a uniquely Aotearoa context.
We also acknowledge the connection to Ranginui. The concept of “rangi” in Takarangi symbolises ascension, aspiration, and reaching upwards—much like striving for knowledge or aiming to grow beyond current boundaries.
How Takarangi Shapes Our Future
The choice of the name Takarangi is not just about aligning with our brand—it’s about encapsulating our vision for the future. As we move forward, Takarangi will symbolise how we weave together insights, share knowledge, and build connections within the physical education community. It reflects our commitment to creating spaces where ideas flow freely and professionals support one another.
This new identity also signals our dedication to maintaining an inclusive and dynamic community. By choosing a name rooted in te reo Māori, we continue to uphold our values of biculturalism, respect, and collaboration.
What to Expect from Takarangi
You’ll notice that Takarangi will continue to deliver the latest news, resources, and professional insights from PENZ. What’s new is how we will integrate stories of growth, reflection, and connection, keeping our community inspired and motivated. Just as the spiral moves outward, we aim to extend our impact and support to all members, fostering a vibrant network of PE professionals.
