Big ideas in PE for year 7-10 students

Presented by Annmarie McDonald, Curriculum Leader for Health and PE, Rototuna High Schools

Learn about how we embarked on a three-year journey that transformed our junior school PE program. We abandoned traditional, sport-based units and incorporated big ideas that empowered our teaching teams with greater flexibility and creativity, while enabling us to design a localised curriculum. Gain valuable insights into our journey and learn how you too can infuse your Kura with a similar approach. During the workshop, you will have time to start thinking about and planning how to adopt this approach.

I have been teaching Health and Physical Education for the last 20 years in special character schools. I have had various roles over the years from teaching year 7-13 students being TIC of Health, HOD of PE as well as being the only PE teacher onsite and teaching NCEA PE online. I’m passionate about growing teachers abilities to implement our curriculum while growing students physical and critical thinking skills.

Building a Personal Learning Network: The Secret of Becoming an Excellent Teacher

Presented by Jinzhi Han, PhD candidate, The Faculty of Education and Social Work/The University of Auckland in Education and Rod Philpot, Senior Lecturer/Programme Leader of the Bachelor of SportHPE degree, The Faculty of Education and Social Work/The University of Auckland

Many New Zealand HPE teachers suggest that equity, inclusion and fairness are key principles that underpin their teaching. It is always much challenging to describe how these principles are enacted in practical Physical Education context. In this workshop, you will participate in a range of activities that endeavour to put some of these principles into practice. The intention of the workshop is to stimulate further dialogue about teaching strategies for and about social justice in the practical Physical Education context.

I am a Senior Lecturer and Programme Leader of the Bachelor of Sport, Health and Physical Education degree at the University of Auckland. Prior to working in tertiary education, I was an assistant teacher, year 12 dean, head of outdoor education, head of department, and an HPE faculty leader in a range of Auckland secondary schools.
